Geneva (Switzerland), July 1, 2025 (SPS) - The city of Geneva, Switzerland, has hosted an international conference on resilient women in Western Sahara.
The conference, held on the sidelines of the Human Rights Council session, was led by Sahrawi human rights defenders, including Sultana Khaya and Al-Ghalia Djimi from the occupied territories, and Al-Asriya Mohamed and Yakouta Al-Mukhtar from the Sahrawi refugee camps and diaspora.
During the conference, Sahrawi human rights advocate Sultana Khaya spoke about some of the torture and abuse she endured due to her activism in support of her people's rights, particularly the siege, torture, and attempted killings her family faced at the hands of Moroccan repressive forces in the occupied city of Boujdour.
Ms. Al-Ghalia Djimi, a member of the Executive Office of the Sahrawi Body Against Moroccan Occupation (ISACOM), affirmed that the suffering of the Sahrawi people in the occupied part of Western Sahara is immense and unimaginable.
The experiences of young women Al-Asriya Mohamed and Yakouta Al-Mukhtar from the refugee camps and diaspora were also presented. They focused on their struggle as a model for young Sahrawi women born after the Moroccan invasion and their role in advocating for the just cause of the Sahrawi people and building the institutions of the Sahrawi state.
The conference was attended by several representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Switzerland, civil society, international activists, experts in human rights, heads of some international organizations, as well as politicians, academics, and intellectuals.
