Buenos Aires, 30 May 2025 (SPS) – The Second International Conference of Journalists and Media Professionals in Solidarity with the Sahrawi Cause concluded with the announcement of a new Latin American Network of Journalists and Media in Solidarity with the Sahrawi Cause.

The conference—co-organized by the Sahrawi Union of Journalists, Writers, and Artists and the Argentine branch of the Federation, in collaboration with trade unions and solidarity organizations—was held under the slogan "Journalism and Action for the Decolonization of Western Sahara" from May 28 to 30.

In its final Buenos Aires Declaration, the conference resolved to establish the Latin American Network to bolster existing efforts and coordinate journalistic work across the region regarding the conflict that keeps Western Sahara as Africa's last colony awaiting decolonization.

Additionally, the conference decided to create the Bassiri International Journalism Prize in coordination with the Journalists' Union. The inaugural edition will honor Sahrawi political prisoner-journalists detained in Moroccan prisons.

In its closing statement, the conference condemned the Moroccan occupation's criminalization of journalism in occupied Western Sahara. It reaffirmed the need to unify media efforts to: Inform international public opinion on developments in the Sahrawi cause, help break the blockade on Western Sahara, and counter Moroccan propaganda.
