Nicaragua reaffirms support for Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence

 Managua (Nicaragua), May 25, 2025 (SPS) – Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Valdrack Jaentschke reiterated his country’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence during a ceremony held at the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry, according to a press release from the Sahrawi Republic’s embassy in Nicaragua.

The Nicaraguan minister also conveyed greetings from President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo to President and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the Polisario Front and the outbreak of the armed struggle.

The event was attended by the President of the Nicaraguan National Assembly, Dr. Gustavo Porras, the Sahrawi Ambassador to Nicaragua, Ouali Aali Salem Mahfoud, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Nicaragua, representatives of the Sahrawi-Nicaraguan Parliamentary Friendship Group, and media outlets.

For his part, the Sahrawi Ambassador highlighted the significance of this occasion for the Sahrawi people in their ongoing struggle to achieve their legitimate rights to self-determination and independence.

Addressing the human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, the Sahrawi diplomat condemned the grave crimes committed by the Moroccan occupation authorities against Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan jails. He called on the international community to take urgent action to secure their immediate release.
