Asian and Pacific Solidarity Conference with Western Sahara held in Timor-Leste’s capital

Dili (East Timor), May 19, 2025 (SPS) – The Timorese capital, Dili, hosted Monday the proceedings of the "Asian and Pacific Solidarity Conference with Western Sahara," attended by a large number of representatives from Timorese civil society and solidarity associations with the Sahrawi people, including delegates from Japan and Australia.

The conference was co-organized by the Forum of Non-Governmental Organizations in Timor-Leste, the Timor-Leste Solidarity Movement with Western Sahara, the Japanese Solidarity Group with Western Sahara, and the Embassy of the Sahrawi Republic in Timor-Leste.

The event was honored by the presence of H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, as a guest of honor, alongside a representative from the Timorese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Dili.

A Sahrawi delegation also participated in the conference, including Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, the Polisario Front’s representative to the United Nations, and coordinator with MINURSO, as well as Mr. Abba Malainin, Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to Timor-Leste.

The conference featured speeches from numerous representatives of solidarity movements with the Sahrawi people, all of whom reaffirmed their strong support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence. They emphasized the need to continue raising awareness about the Sahrawi cause and expanding solidarity networks across Asia and the Pacific region.
