Shaheed El-Hafed, May 11, 2025 (SPS) - The European Youth Forum adopted a recommendation calling for a fair and lasting solution to the Sahrawi issue, affirming its support for the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination and control over their natural resources.
The forum condemned the human rights violations perpetrated by the Moroccan kingdom in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
The recommendation included several key points, notably: renewing solidarity with the peaceful struggle of the Sahrawi people in the face of international complicity and the silence of the United Nations and the MINURSO mission, which lacks a mandate to monitor human rights.
It also called for a free and fair referendum for the Sahrawi people’s self-determination, in line with United Nations resolutions, particularly Security Council Resolution 1415.
Furthermore, it urged pressure on European governments, especially Spain, to assume their legal and historical responsibilities towards Western Sahara, rejecting the legitimization of Moroccan occupation. The recommendation emphasized the importance of strengthening relationships with Sahrawi youth organizations and supporting the establishment of a working group led by the National Council for Transitional Justice and partner Sahrawi organizations.
Additionally, it called for enabling MINURSO to monitor human rights conditions and increasing humanitarian assistance directed to Sahrawi refugees in the refugee camps, in coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The Sahrawi Youth Union (UJTSARIO) praised the adoption of this recommendation, considering it a culmination of the diligent efforts made by Sahrawi youth to raise awareness of their just cause globally. The union affirmed its commitment to work with international partners to end the last remnants of colonialism in Africa.
