Algiers, April 30, 2025 (SPS) – The El Moudjahid newspaper forum hosted a conference organized by the Mechaal Echahid Association in solidarity with the Sahrawi cause and in support of the Freedom March for Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan occupation jails.
Several Algerian political parties and organizations expressed deep concern over the conditions faced by Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan jails, particularly the Gdeim Izik group and student activists, who endure sham trials, inhumane treatment, and brutal living conditions—violating basic detention standards and international conventions.
In its statement, Algerian civil society called on the international community to uphold its responsibility in protecting Sahrawi prisoners, demanding their immediate release and urging pressure on the Makhzen regime to allow human rights organizations, parliamentarians, and journalists access to the occupied territories, which remain under siege and media blackout.
Sahrawi Ambassador to Algeria and National Secretariat member Mr. Abdelkader Taleb Omar delivered a presentation on the latest developments in the Sahrawi cause. He emphasized the Sahrawi people’s unwavering commitment to their legitimate rights and their readiness to sacrifice for freedom, while condemning Morocco’s obstruction of international legitimacy decisions and its role as a destabilizing functional state in the region.
The ambassador praised Algeria’s steadfast and unconditional support for the Sahrawi people’s struggle for freedom and independence, highlighting the deep historical ties between the two nations and Algeria’s pivotal regional role.
The conference also served as an occasion for Algerian civil society to bid farewell to the Sahrawi ambassador, whose diplomatic mission concluded as he assumes the role of Minister of Education in the Sahrawi government.
