Johannesburg, 10 October 2024 (SPS) - The ruling African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa has reaffirmed its steadfast and principled position in solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination, noting that the party has always stood alongside oppressed peoples around the world since its founding.

In a statement, the party condemned Morocco's ongoing occupation of Western Sahara, considering it "a clear violation of international law," and called for the implementation of United Nations resolutions that demand a referendum for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.

The statement emphasized that the party maintains its firm and principled stance in solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination, pointing out that "the party has always stood beside oppressed peoples around the world since its inception and has confirmed its strong support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the liberation of Western Sahara from occupation."

The party also stressed that "it remains steadfast in its support for the Sahrawi people's rights to independence and freedom and will not allow any actions that could harm its principled position regarding self-determination and anti-colonialism," highlighting that "it will continue to work with its allies, including Algeria and other countries in the international community, to ensure the Sahrawi people achieve their legitimate right to freedom."
