Awserd (refugee camp), 5 May 2024 (SPS) - The President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, confirmed on Saturday from the Sahrawi refugee camp of Awserd that his country "will continue the struggle and negotiate until freedom is achieved and the borders of the Sahrawi Republic are respected."

During his supervision of the closing events of the International Cinema Festival in Western Sahara "Fi Sahra" held in the Sahrawi refugee camp of Awserd (April 29-May 5), the Sahrawi President held a press conference with the international media present there, where he stated, "We are currently at war, and we will continue the struggle. We will not fall into the same trap again, and we will negotiate until we achieve freedom and establish respect for the borders of the Sahrawi Republic, which is a founding member of the African Union."

Regarding Morocco and its continuous transgressions, the Sahrawi President responded that "Morocco always tries to impose agendas and conditions, but that era has passed, and we will not accept it." He added, "As a popular front and a republic, based on the responsibility plan and what the international community has provided, we are ready to end the conflict and engage in negotiations without preconditions, through the application of international legitimacy and enabling the people to regain their rights because it is about decolonization."

When asked about the reality of the change in the Spanish position and the position of some European countries regarding the Sahrawi issue, the Sahrawi President stated, "There has been reluctance in recent years within the European Parliament, and it has not changed, which is unfortunate. It has become evident over time that bribery has taken place, as the involvement of the Moroccan regime in bribing European parliamentarians to influence their positions has been revealed."

He further commented, "As Africans, we used to believe that Europe upholds law, justice, and values. But over time, we have discovered that humans can be subject to weak positions. We have found that even the Spanish Parliament and Spanish parties have failed to discover the real reason for the change in their position, which had been unanimous for about 40 years, to a change in the opposite direction. Therefore, there are many speculations about the reason, but we do not have decisive evidence."

In this context, he added, "With the change in the position, we have frozen our official relations with the Spanish government, and we are still waiting for the correction of their stance. However, this does not mean freezing the relationship with the Spanish society and the solidarity movement because there are strong and close relations that are growing, and we hope they will have a full impact to guide the Prime Minister back to the right path."

Regarding the UN envoy, Staffan de Mistura, President Ghali stated, "It is not possible to evaluate the work of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General so far because it is still at the beginning of the journey, but we hope that he will draw lessons from the experiences of his predecessors, learn from their mistakes, and build on their successes."
