Submitted on

New York (UN), 24 October 2020 (SPS) - The Kingdom of Lesotho has reiterated its support to inalienable right to self-determination and independence of the people of Western Sahara in line with the relevant United Nations resolutions.
In a statement before the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee), on Friday in New York, the delegation of Lesotho expressed concern over the slow pace of progress in the decolonization of Western Sahara, urging the occupying powers to respect the human rights of the Sahrawi people and condemning all destructive attempts intended to divert even the little progress that has been achieved thus far.
It called for an urgent appointment of a Personal Envoy Secretary-General (PESG) for Western Sahara, stressing that the absence of the Personal Envoy is no longer justifiable and contributes to stalling the progress towards Self-determination of Western Sahara.
The delegation expressed disappointment that the self-determination referendum has not been held and the Security Council seems hesitant to employ all vital instruments at its disposal to ensure that all parties involved, comply with the peace plan.
Finally it reiterated call on the United Nations and its Member states to take necessary measures, to end an illegal occupation of parts of the Sahrawi Democratic Republic (SADR). (SPS)
