Meeting between Mhamed Jaddad and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Geneva, Sept 13, 2017 (SPS) -, the Sahrawi  Coordinator of the Frente POLISARIO with MINURSO, Mr. Mhamed Jaddad was received today by Mr. Zaid Ra'ad Al Husein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at the headquarters of the Wilson Palace in Geneva.

Continuing with its usual policy of collaboration with international organizations to seek measures to ensure full respect for human rights and, assuming its obligations, the Saharawi side has attended this meeting in a spirit of good faith and full cooperation to seek and propose formulas and measures to observe and improve the situation of human rights in Western Sahara.

In his hearing with the United Nations High Commissioner, the Saharawi side has expressed its willingness to put as many facilities as are necessary for the success of the mission of the High Commissioner in the Non-Self-Governing Territory of Western Sahara and, at the same time, technical visits cannot itself  constitute a permanent, continuous and credible way of monitoring the human rights situation, since such a role can only be assumed by MINURSO, given its continued presence on the ground.

The Saharawi official has reminded the High Commissioner of the dramatic situation of Saharawi political prisoners and the responsibility of the various actors in the international community, taking into account the international legal status of the territory and the obligations it imposes on the actors.
