Events of 2010

In 2010 human rights conditions in Morocco and Western Sahara were mixed, and in some aspects, decidedly poor. The government used repressive legislation and complaisant courts to punish and imprison peaceful opponents, especially those who violated taboos and laws against criticizing the king and the monarchy, questioning Morocco's claim over Western Sahara, or "denigrating" Islam.

October 31: (The Moroccan invasion of Western Sahara) Morocco occupied militarily the town of Jdiria in the north-east of the Western Sahara and sent 25000 Moroccan soldiers into the territory (Spain retreated toward El Aaiun, Smara and Dakhla).
November: Madrid confirmed its obligation to self-determination and commitment to its international obligations.
November 6: Hassan II ordered the launch of "The Green March", including 350,000 Moroccans moved towards the Western Sahara to occupy it.

Since 2014 the Western Sahara situation has risen high on the agenda of the African Union (AU) with the former president of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, appointed as the Special Envoy of the Chairperson for Western Sahara. The Peace and Security Council (PSC) has now decided to place the issue on its agenda at least twice a year.
