Tenerife (Canary Islands), 12 May 2024 (SPS) - The solidarity movement in Tenerife, Canary Islands, called upon the Spanish state to assume its historical and moral responsibilities towards the just Sahrawi issue, condemning the Moroccan occupation's plundering of Sahrawi natural resources in all its forms and the involvement of complicit foreign companies.

During a demonstration organized by the Sahrawi community and the solidarity movement in front of the Spanish government headquarters on the island, in solidarity with the Sahrawi people on the occasion of the commemoration of the foundation of the Polisario Front, the participants denounced the ongoing Moroccan occupation's plundering of Sahrawi natural resources, including marine wealth, phosphates, sand, solar and wind energy, as well as the complicity of foreign companies, especially Spanish companies, in the theft of Sahrawi resources.

The demonstration was also an opportunity for the protesters to express their support for all Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, notably the group of "Gdeim Izik" and the student movement, condemning the policy of the Moroccan occupation system, which continues its human rights violations in the occupied part of Western Sahara.

The participants in the demonstration called upon the United Nations and the Security Council to expedite the implementation of their resolutions regarding the organization of a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people and to condemn the position of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, and his support for the Moroccan regime's argument aimed at continuing its occupation of parts of Sahrawi territory.
