Wilaya of Awserd, May 5, 2024 (SPS) - The activities of the 18th edition of the International Film Festival in Western Sahara (FISAHARA) concluded on Sunday evening in the wilaya of Awserd, with an emphasis on supporting the Sahrawi people.

The event was attended by President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front Mr. Brahim Ghali, members of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front and the government, delegations from friendly countries, and those interested in cultural affairs.

The closing ceremony included speeches that highlighted the importance of the festival and its solidarity background with the Sahrawi people. Thanks were also extended to the contributors and participants in the event. Films from different countries and continents (Algeria, Palestine, Colombia, East Timor) were screened during the festival, which lasted for a week.

The International Film Festival in Western Sahara is an important opportunity to learn about Sahrawi culture, which faces challenges of assimilation and erasure by the Moroccan occupation, as well as to gain new supporters and defenders of the Sahrawi cause.

The Palestinian film "200 Meters" won the 18th edition of the International Film Festival. The film "200 Meters" documents part of the daily suffering experienced by Palestinians due to the separation wall between the Palestinian and Israeli sides through the journey of a father who lives on the Palestinian side and embarks on a journey to go to his son on the Israeli side.

The film "Women Resisting in Western Sahara" came in second place, as it talks about the suffering of Sahrawi women in the occupied cities of Western Sahara and what they are subjected to by brutality and repression by the Moroccan forces.

As for the cultural competition, the wilaya of Awserd won first place nationally in the traditional fair.
