Morocco’s plundering of Western Sahara natural resources, illegal, says British PM

London, June 9, 2011 (SPS) - The plundering of natural resources of Western Sahara by Morocco is "illegal," said Thursday British deputy Jeremy Corbyn.

Western Sahara’s natural resources must benefit the Sahrawi people. It is illegal, in accordance with international law, that they continue to be exploited by the Moroccan occupier," underlined Mr. Corbyn.

''In Parliament I personally challenged the European Union on this issue, calling for an end to the exploitation of Saharawi natural resources, and I am delighted that the British government decided last month to oppose signing the renewal of the agreement of EU-Morocco fisheries,'' he said.

Mr. Corbin mentioned the ''complicity'' of the foreign trade partners and their governments in the exploitation of these resources, which constitute a ''financial windfall '' for Morocco, while the Saharawi are relegated to the margins of society, he said.

The illegal exploitation and plundering of natural resources of Western Sahara by Morocco, the occupying Power, has been repeatedly condemned by Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW), which includes organizations from more than 30 countries. (SPS)
