Popular Party achieves overwhelming result in the Spanish general election

Submitted on

Madrid, Nov 21, 2011 (SPS) - The general elections organized Sunday in Spain has resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Popular Party at the expense of Socialist Party, whilst the United Left and Union for Progress and Democracy (UPyD) achieved tangible progress.

The Popular Party won 186 seats in the 350-seats lower chamber of Parliament, whereas the Socialist Party plummeted from 169 seats to 110, their worst performance ever, according to the observers.

The result achieved by the PP is the best ever, after about 11 million voters gave their confidence through ballot boxes, at the time when 7 millions voted for the Socialists.

Analysts indicated that the resounding defeat of the Socialist Party is due to the mishandling of the economic crisis, pressure of debts, high unemployment which have almost affected 5 million people and spread of the financial and administrative corruption.

The United Left Party jumped from 2 seats to 10 and Union for Progress and Democracy jumped from one to five seats, winning more than a million votes. (SPS)
