Tokyo, May 20, 2013 (SPS) - Members from different parties represented in the Parliament of Japan have voiced support to a political solution to conflict of Western Sahara through a democratic referendum, informed Saharawi diplomatic sources.
In a statement of concern on Western Sahara on Monday, the aforementioned parties expressed support to a political solution to the Western Sahara conflict through a democratic referendum that will allow the people of Western Sahara to freely choose its destiny, adding that this “will make possible the regional integration and the stability in the region.”
The statement recalled to the legal opinion of the International Court of Justice of October 16, 1975 which stated that there were no ties of territorial sovereignty between the territory of Western Sahara and the Kingdom of Morocco, underlying that the Court has not found legal ties of such a nature as might affect of resolution 1514 (XV) in the decolonization of Western Sahara, in particular, the principle of self-determination through the free and genuine expression of the peoples of the territory.
Signatories of this statement expressed concern over the repression, abuses and serious human rights violations reported and documented by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Robert F. Kennedy Center.
They, therefore, called for involvement by the international community in the protection of human rights of Saharawi people.
