Italy: installation of parliamentary intergroup for solidarity with the Saharawi people

Rome, July 3, 2013 (SPS)-The Italian Parliamentary Intergroup of solidarity with the Saharawi people was installed Wednesday at a meeting in the Parliament headquarters in Rome.

 

The Intergroup, which was formed in the presence of some 70 parliamentarians belonging to different groups in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, is tasked with developing initiatives, studies and activities to support the Saharawi people right to self-determination, "according to a statement by its members.

 

Among the actions expected from the Intergroup will be "taking any useful initiative to promote the resumption of direct negotiations, under the auspices of the United Nations, between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, to achieve in the shortest possible time, an outcome consistent with the UN resolutions, which respects the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, "the source said.

 

It will also "play a leading role in the Moroccan-Saharawi conflict and use the weight of the European Union (EU) and good relations with all stakeholders to encourage the search for solution to the conflict that respects the right of people of Western Sahara to self-determination, "they added.

 

The members of this new structure have argued that "the stabilization of the region would bring clear advantages to relations between Italy and North Africa," providing, in this regard, meetings between the head of Italian diplomacy and the presidents of the two chambers of the Italian Parliament on the Saharawi conflict.

 

The Intergroup was joined by all the political forces represented in Parliament namely, the Democratic Party, the People of Freedom, Civic Choice, Sinistra Ecologia e Libertà, Fratelli d'Italia, 5 stars Movement and the Northern League, the statement said. (SPS)
