Spokane (Washington, U.S) April 23, 2014 (SPS) - The Spokane-based ONG “Washington Friends of Western Sahara” has announced its participation in the annual Holidays In Peace programme by hosting 10 Saharawi children from the Saharawi refugee camps for two months this summer.

“This is a great opportunity and a blessing for us to serve these Saharawi children in even a small way” said Nathan Thiry, a director of Washington Friends of Western Sahara, in a statement obtained by SPS.

Thiry hoped that this initiative will be a “yearly occurrence” and an opportunity to increase awareness of the U.S. public opinion about the plight of the Saharawi people.

“This humanitarian initiative purposefully places these children with host families to give them a much-needed respite from the Sahara desert summer heat. It also provides them an opportunity to access health care not normally available to them, as well as formulate healthy, enriching, and meaningful relationships with the host families,” reads the statement.

Founded in 2014, the Washington Friends of Western Sahara is a nonprofit, charitable organization formed by concerned American citizens committed to providing humanitarian aid and assistance programs to the people of Western Sahara, and the improvement of human rights policies and practices in the territory and help for the implementation of UN resolution regarding Africa’s last colony.
