Polisario Front welcomes EP ratification of establishment of Intergroup for Western Sahara

Submitted on

Brussels, December 12, 2014 (SPS) - Minister and Polisario Front representative for Europe, Mohamed Sidati, welcomed Thursday in Brussels the ratification by the European Parliament of the formal establishment of the Intergroup on Western Sahara.

"Members of the world's largest parliament have shown once again their commitment to uphold the principles of the European Union: democracy, freedom and respect for human rights," Sidati said in a statement.

Recalling that an intergroup on Western Sahara exists within the European Parliament since 1986, Sidati said this shows that Europe, which Parliamentarians represent the entire population, "is sensitive to the legitimate demands of the Saharawi people and its desire for a just and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara."

The Intergroup has a number of tasks, such as giving greater visibility to the question of Western Sahara in the agenda of the European Parliament.

Also it is in charge of raising awareness on the last colonial problem in Africa, contributing to the search for a solution to the conflict by applying the legitimized right to self-determination by international law and UN resolutions and ensuring that Morocco respects fundamental human rights in Western Sahara that it illegally occupies.
