Zimbabwe reaffirms firm support to legitimate Saharawi struggle

Harare, August 26, 2015 (SPS) - Zimbabwe Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi on Tuesday reaffirmed his country’s firm support to the legitimate struggle of the Saharawi people for freedom and independence, said a statement of the Saharawi embassy in Harare.


In a meeting with Saharawi Ambassador Deich Mohamed Saleh, the minister indicated that Zimbabwe is clear that Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara is illegal and contradicts the resolutions of the United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU).


“A solution to Western Sahara issue must go through enabling the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination via a free, fair and transparent referendum,” stated head of Zimbabwe diplomacy.


Mr. Mumbengegwi called on the international community to expedite the search for a solution guaranteeing the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence.


Saharawi ambassador, for his part, praised Zimbabwe’s unbroken support to the struggle of Saharawi people to liberate their national territory, highlighting Morocco’s repeated human rights violations against innocent Saharawis.


The meeting also examined the role can be played by the African Union in finding a settlement to Western Sahara issue. (SPS)
