BRUSSELS (BELGIUM),October 07, 2015 (SPS)- EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini said Tuesday that The European Union supports the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to achieve a “fair, lasting and mutually acceptable” political solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.

Mogherini was speaking on behalf of European Commission in a reply to a question of a European deputy of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group Fernando Maura Barandiar, asking her about the presence of United Nations’ report accusing Rabat of “spending millions of dollars to influence officials of the UN High Commission for Human Rights and preventing them from observing the serious humanitarian situation endured by the people of Western Sahara because of the Moroccan occupation.

On this occasion, the European diplomat underlined that EU “supports Ban Ki-moon’s efforts for a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement of the Sahrawi issue, respecting the inalienable right of Sahrawi people to self-determination.”

“EU encourages the parties to find a negotiated solution to the conflict and welcomes the efforts of the Personal Envoy of UN Secretary General Christopher Ross and those of UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO),” she underlined.

The European Union is “concerned about the persistence of this conflict and its repercussions on the security and the respect of human rights in the region,” added Mogherini.(SPS)
