5th Conference of ITUC expresses support for the right of Saharawi people to self-determination and denounces their continued suffering

Melbourne (Australia) 22 November 2022 (SPS)- The Fifth Conference of the International Trade Union Confederation concluded its work this morning in Melbourne, Australia, expressing in its closing statement support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and condemning their continued suffering due to the continuous Moroccan occupation.

The conference, which was held between November 17 and 22, approved its final statement, which included a paragraph devoted to the Sahrawi issue, in which it stated that the Union supports the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and condemns the suffering that this people is subjected to by the Moroccan occupation.

During her closing speech, the outgoing Secretary-General of the International Trade Union Confederation, Mrs. Sharan Burrow, emphasized that everyone must not forget the occupation of Western Sahara and the reality of the occupation that the Sahrawi people live every single day.

During the conference, Mr. Luca Visentini was elected as the new Secretary General of the ITUC.

It should be noted that the 5th conference of ITUC was attended by more than 1,000 trade unionists representing around 200 million working people in over 130 countries

A delegation from the Sahrawi Union Workers participated in this international event, represented by the Union's foreign relations official, Mr. Al-Mami Abeedi, and Mahmoud Faraji, the Union's representative in Northern Europe, in addition to Mr. Kamal Mohamed Fadel, the representative of the Polisario Front in Australia.
