The Republic of Peru affirms its support for the decolonization of Western Sahara

New York, October 4, 2022 (SPS)- The Deputy Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations, Mr. Luis Felipe Ugarell Basurto, affirmed, in his country’s intervention yesterday before the Fourth Committee in New York, that his country, which adopts anti-colonialism as a state policy, strongly supports decolonization from the Western Sahara.

The Peruvian diplomat recalled his country's recent position on confirming its recognition of the Sahrawi Republic, considering that this position falls within the context of Peru's conviction of the need to resolve the conflict in Western Sahara in accordance with relevant General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, especially resolution 1514, which allowed many countries to put an end to colonial presence. Peru expressed its support for the United Nations efforts to decolonize Western Sahara, referring to its support for the 1991 UN-African settlement plan, and for peace efforts led by the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, in the region.

In this context, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations indicated that his country "contributes, by supporting the efforts and consultations carried out by the envoy of the Secretary-General, to opening dialogue and negotiations by maintaining friendly relations and diplomatic cooperation with both the Sahrawi Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco."
