Juba (South Sudan) 22 Sebtember 2022 (SPS)- The Ministry of Foreign Relations and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan issued a statement, Thursday, in response to the Kingdom of Morocco’s attempts to discourage it from resuming relations with the Sahrawi Republic, after the recent announcement of the resumption of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of South Sudan and the Saharawi Republic.
The statement explained that its embassy in Morocco received a letter of inquiry yesterday from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the matter, to which the statement replied that, "the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation would like to inform the government of the Kingdom of Morocco, that the meeting between our delegation and the Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs does not negate our strategic bilateral relations with the Kingdom."
The statement additionally added that "the Republic of South Sudan is a member of the African Union and the United Nations and would want to reiterate that it does not see it fit to have contrary views to the position of the African Union and UN Resolution 690, as a viable engagement frameworks to find a lasting solution over the dispute on Western Sahara."
South Sudan and the Saharawi Republic decided to re-establish diplomatic relations last Tuesday 20 September after a meeting held by South Sudan’s Vice President, Mr Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, with the Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the side-lines of the 77th regular session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
