Timor-Leste’s FRETILIN Party approved a resolution in its latest Congress supporting the legitimate Struggle of the people of Western Sahara to Self-determination and Independence

Dili (Timor-Leste) 22 September 2022 (SPS) - Timor-Leste’s Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) Party, the biggest party in the actual government coalition in Timor-Leste has approved a resolution in its latest V Congress held recently in the Capital Dili supporting the right of the people of Western Sahara to Self-determination and Independence.
The Full Resolution reads:
“FRETILIN Party is committed to the values and principles that guided our arduous and long process for national liberation, the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) party expresses its support and solidarity for the struggle of the people of Western Sahara to achieve their right to self-determination and independence through a referendum to be organized by United Nations.
The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) or Western Sahara has been recognized by more than 80 Countries, and it is a full member of the African Union.
Despite the mentioned above Western Sahara remains a Non-Self-Governing Territory registered on the agenda of the IV Committee of the UN General Assembly as a decolonisation issue since 1963 in accordance with Chapter XI of the UN Charter.
The UN and African Unity Organization (OAU) jointly brokered a ceasefire and elaborated a settlement plan, approved by the UN Security Council in its Resolutions 658 (1990) and 690 (1991).
The latter resolution also established a United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to organize a referendum of the Saharawi people in order to allow them to determine their own future and to monitor the ceasefire.
Despite that the UN General Assembly and the Security Council have adopted many resolutions that recognize the right of the people of Western Sahara to exercise their right to Self-determination still unable to exercise their right”.
The Saharawi Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Mr. Abba Malainin, has participated in FRETILIN Congress and has met with the Leadership and many Cadres of the Party.
