Sahrawi political prisoner Mohamed Lamin Haddi subjected to "cruel and inhuman" treatment in Moroccan jails

Submitted on

Algiers, 23 May 2022 (SPS) - The Saharawi prisoner of the Gdeim Izik group, journalist Mohamed Lamin Haddi, is subjected to the "most cruel" forms of torture in the jails of the Moroccan occupier, which continues its policy of inhuman repression against him, in flagrant violation of human rights, his family announced.
Mohamed Ali Haddi indicated in a statement to the APS that his brother Mohamed Lamin, who is in Tiflet 2 prison, "was the victim of an attack by the prison administration and its director, by spraying his cell with toxic insecticides, while he was inside".
He added: "He was forced to stay in his cell just to dissuade him from engaging in a hunger strike that he used to do periodically, which led him to faint for hours, due to the smell of a toxic substance, causing health complications for which he received no first aid or treatment.
Mohamed Ali Haddi also indicated that the Moroccan occupier, who continues to commit serious violations against his brother with various methods of torture and abuse, "falsified the facts of this attack, claiming that prisoner Mohamed Lamin Haddi was taken out like the other prisoners of the cells before spraying them with pesticides."
He also declared in his statement that his family issued a statement in this regard, in which they refuted the lies reported by the media of the Makhzenian regime, and mentioned the acts of torture and violence practiced "in a cruel and inhumane manner" by the occupation authorities against their son.
In addition, Mohamed Ali Haddi stressed that the health of his brother "is deteriorating due to medical neglect and mistreatment he suffers," specifying in this sense that the prisoner "is not allowed to leave the cell, even for short periods.
He added in the same context: "During my last visit to him, I noticed a clear change in his features and body, bruises, wounds and signs of torture are clearly visible, which indicates that my brother lives in the darkest conditions and suffers the worst physical and psychological torture."
It is worth mentioning, the prisoner of the Gdeim Izik group had already been the subject of repeated attacks including that carried out on 15 March 2022 by the employees of the prison administration "while he planned to inform the latter of his decision to observe a hunger strike", according to his brother who specified that the longest hunger strike observed by Mohamed Lamin Haddi lasted 69 days during which he suffered medical negligence and several chronic diseases, including asthma.
To this end, Mohamed Ali Haddi stressed that the daily suffering of his brother "will not deter him from continuing his fight for freedom, nor his family and the Sahrawi people to continue the struggle for independence, and stop the plundering by the Moroccan regime of the wealth of Western Sahara.
Finally, he called for "the release of all Saharawi prisoners, civilian and political, held in the jails of the Moroccan occupier".
