For De Mistura UN process is appropriate framework to settle conflict in Western Sahara

Algiers, 23 April 2022 (SPS) – Algeria’s Special Envoy for Western Sahara issue and Maghreb Countries Amar Belani underlined Wednesday, that in the eyes of the personal envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Staffan de Mistura, the UN process must remain “the most appropriate framework for the settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara.
The information relayed by some Spanish and Moroccan media outlets, according to which the personal envoy of the United Nations for Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura is satisfied with the change in the position of the Spanish government on the Sahrawi issue, “contributes to a manipulation action orchestrated by some official circles in Madrid in order to calm the uproar caused by the controversial decision taken by the head of government Pedro Sanchez,” said Belani.
In reality, said the diplomat, “the personal envoy Staffan de Mistura, with whom we are in contact, is the first to affirm that he was very surprised at the change in the position of Spain and that could complicate the UN process.”
This process must remain, in the eyes of De Mistura, “the most appropriate framework for the settlement of the conflict which opposes the Polisario Front to Morocco,” affirmed Belani.
“The circles that are close to the personal envoy Staffan de Mistura underlined the validity of the declaration made on 20 January by the UN spokesman, i.e. any declaration on the position of the personal envoy or his activities that are not published by himself or by the office of the spokesman is often a distortion of facts.”
