Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Feb 02, 2022 (SPS) - The Special Envoy of Algeria for Western Sahara and the Maghreb Countries, Mr. Omar Belani, stated that "the situation in Western Sahara contradicts the principle of liberation and the spirit of solidarity on the African continent.
During his speech at the work of the 40th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, Belani said that "the continuous violations of human rights in the occupied areas of Western Sahara have caused a humanitarian crisis that goes against the principles and objectives of the foundation of the African Union, a continental organization created to protect and guarantee human rights”.
Mr. Belani informed the African ministers present at the meeting, that on November 13, 2020, the Moroccan occupation army was involved in the repression of a group of Saharawi civilians who were exercising their rights of peaceful expression in the El region. -Guerguerat, south of Western Sahara, and as a result of this flagrant attack, Morocco expanded its occupation of more portions of the territory of the Saharawi Republic, thus violating the agreements signed between the two parties to the conflict, Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO.
Belani emphasized that "the Executive Council of the African Union is now more than ever obliged to assume its responsibilities and enforce its decision regarding the visit of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights to the occupied parts of the territory of the Saharawi Republic, taking into account that the prevailing situation in the territory represents a clear violation of the African Charter of Human Rights” SPS
