President Tebboune: Western Sahara is a decolonization issue

Algiers, 5 April 2021 (SPS) - President of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed Sunday evening that the Western Sahara issue remains a decolonization issue and its settlement implies a return to the relevant UN decisions, expressing his wish to see the brothers (Moroccan Kingdom and Polisario Front) reach a solution accepted by both parties.
During his regular meeting with officials of some national media, President Tebboune stressed that the issue of Western Sahara is on the agenda of the fourth United Nations Committee on Decolonization.
"All international parties approve of this approach without exception. It is therefore appropriate to leave the way to the UN to settle this conflict," he added.
Regarding the positive points recorded by Algerian diplomacy at the last session of the African Union (AU), especially after the adoption of Algeria's recommendations by the continental organization regarding the recent position of the AU Peace and Security Council vis-à-vis the conflict in Western Sahara, President Tebboune said that "the AU had shown integrity in its approach.
"Attempts to perpetuate the conflict cannot be the solution," said President Tebboune, stressing the imperative for the AU Peace and Security Council to consider this issue and inform the UN Security Council of the decisions taken at the continental level to achieve a final and just solution to this issue.
President Tebboune expressed wish to see the two parties to the conflict (Morocco and Polisario Front) reach a final solution without one party imposing its opinion on the other. (SPS)
