German government position on Western Sahara, "constant and unchanging"

Submitted on

Berlin, 18 January 2020 (SPS) – Polisario Front representative in Germany Najat Handi said on Saturday that the German government’s position, in line with international law concerning the Sahrawi cause is "constant and unchanging."
In a statement to APS, the Sahrawi diplomat said that Germany’s position with regard to the Sahrawi question was clear, officially expressed by German representative to the UN Christoph Heusgen, during last December’s Security Council consultations on Western Sahara.
"The definitive solution of the question must take place within a UN framework, in accordance with the relevant international resolutions," he had said then.
In the absence of a contrary decision to the previous one in support of the process of political settlement of the Sahrawi cause, the position of the German government therefore remains "constant and unchanging," she stressed.
He added that the remarks attributed to the German ambassador in Rabat, Götz Schmidt-Bremme about the Sahrawi cause "do not reflect the official position of the German government, contrary to what the Makhzen media are trying to make believe."
Last December, German Ambassador to the UN, Christoph Heusgen, said during a Security Council meeting on the latest developments in Western Sahara, that "resolving conflicts peacefully means following the rules and implementing UN resolutions and apply international law."
He affirmed that his country "remains deeply committed to a political solution which is really in the interest of all". (SPS)
