New York (United Nations), 21 December 2020 (SPS) - UN Security Council will hold Monday a meeting on Western Sahara against the background of the resumption of fighting between the Polisario Front and Morocco, and outgoing US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Morocco's alleged sovereignty over the Sahrawi territory.
During this meeting, convened at the request of Germany, the Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Bintou Keita, and the special representative and head of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Colin Stewart, will brief on recent developments in Western Sahara.
The members of the Security Council will stress the importance of speeding up the appointment of a UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, to push for the resumption of the political process, on hold since the resignation of former envoy Horst Kohler in May 2019.
The UN Security Council had insisted, in its Resolution 2548 that renewed the mandate of MINURSO in October, on the appointment, "as soon as possible," of a new UN chief's personal envoy to Western Sahara. (SPS)
