Moscow, 05 December 2020 (SPS) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called Thursday on the parties to the conflict in Western Sahara, Morocco and the Polisario Front, to show restraint and resume the UN process.
In a telephone interview with his Moroccan counterpart, Lavrov discussed developments in the situation in Western Sahara, in the face of continuing military clashes in El Guerguerat, southern Western Sahara, following Morocco's violation of the Ceasefire Agreement on November 13, calling for restraint, respect for the ceasefire and the resumption of negotiations under the auspices of the UN, said the Russian FM.
Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum called on Wednesday on the African Union (AU) to assume its responsibility for the serious developments in the situation in Western Sahara and attempts to impose the policy of fait-accompli.
In his intervention, by video-conference, during the proceedings of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, the head of the Algerian diplomacy said that "in the face of the serious developments in Western Sahara, our continental organization, which had a constructive role in the development and adoption of the UN settlement plan, cannot remain on the sidelines."
"Given the total failure of the Troika mechanism, the African Peace and Security Council must assume its responsibility, in accordance with the text of its institutional protocol," concluded Boukadoum. (SPS)
