Rahabi : region’s stability requires final solution to Western Sahara question

London, 30 November 2020 (SPS) – The region’s stability "is inevitably dependent" on a final and permanent solution, as soon as possible, of Western Sahara question, said Sunday Algerian former diplomat and Minister Abdelaziz Rahabi.
In an interview with Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper Rahabi said: "assuming that the security issues are indivisible, it is therefore meaningless to mobilize to fight terrorism on the grounds that it undermines international security and stability, and at the same time adding fuel to fire and fueling a military conflict in the region by supporting Morocco in its intransigence."
For Rahabi "this attitude of double standards on security issues does not serve stability in the region," stressing that the "stability in the region inevitably requires a definitive and permanent solution to Western Sahara question in the shortest possible terms, by returning to the political process through direct negotiations and according to an agreed agenda for a definitive exit from the crisis."
With regard to the resumption of hostilities between Morocco and the Polisario Front, following the Moroccan occupying assault against the Sahrawi peaceful demonstrators in El-Guerguerat, Rahabi said that this "war broke out because of the political process in stalemate since 1991," adding that it "has recalled to the international community this question and this people forgotten for 30 years. Subsequently it can allow the speeding up of the political solution."
The former diplomat observed that "the big countries and the European Union (EU) admit that there is a real procrastination in dealing with this conflict, which has lasted since 1975," noting that "all countries are now calling for a peaceful political solution that can guarantee to the Sahrawis their right to self-determination. "This in itself is a great achievement," he said. (SPS)
