Polisario Front urges OHCHR not to support Moroccan institutions activities in occupied Sahrawi territories

Geneva, 1 November 2020 (SPS) -  The Polisario Front has called on Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to respect the legal status of the non-self-governing territory of Western Sahara, and in particular to refrain from supporting any activity of the so-called Moroccan National Council for Human Rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

In a letter to OHCHR, Mr. Oubi Bushraya Al-Bashir, member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front, in charge of Europe and the European Union, recalled the decision of the Polisario Front to comply with international human rights treaties, reaffirming its willingness to strengthen cooperation with OHCHR to protect Sahrawi human rights, who are subjected to all forms of violations of their rights under the Moroccan occupation.

The letter highlighted that the Polisario Front confirms its willingness to facilitate visits to the region, to protect the basic rights of the people of the occupied Western Sahara territory, and calls again for the OHCHR to resume the program of technical missions to Western Sahara and the refugee camps that were suspended in 2015.

The Polisario Front stressed the need and importance of OHCHR's implementation of the program of cooperation and capacity-building with the legitimate and sole representative of the Sahrawi people, the Polisario Front, in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution 74/95. (SPS)
