Tifariti (Liberated territories), 25 December 2019 (SPS) - A Latin-American international Conference in solidarity with the Sahrawi people will be held in May to “raise awareness about the Sahrawi cause and fight against the Moroccan disinformation,” said on Tuesday the coordinator of the Ecuadorian Association of Friendship with the Sahrawi People (AEAPS) Pablo De La Vega.
In a statement to APS, on the sidelines of the 15th Polisario Front Congress in Tifariti, De La Vega underlined that “11 associations of solidarity with the Sahrawi people in Latin America agreed to hold this international meeting in Panama or Columbia in May 2020.”
“They are associations of solidarity with the Sahrawi people from Brazil, Argentina, Chili, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Columbia, Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua and Cuba,” according to AEAPS’ coordinator.
This international meeting, according to him, “is meant to be a space of coordination of efforts between the different associations, to raise awareness about the Sahrawi issue in all the countries of the continent.”
While underlining the relations between the Ecuador and Western Sahara, dating back to the 1980s, De La Vega pointed out that “this event will be an opportunity to make the Sahrawi issue known in other countries and others peoples of Latin America.”
Created 10 years ago, AEAPS includes intellectuals, university teachers and humanitarians, he said.
“The opening of a diplomatic representation of Western Sahara in Quito in December 2015 helped boosting our activities and making the Sahrawi cause even more known in addition to its local culture (traditions, poetry (…),” he added, affirming that raising awareness about the Sahrawi issue is among the main priorities of his association.
“We are also struggling against the Moroccan disinformation through photo exhibitions on the situation of the Sahrawi people and festivals,” he underlined. (SPS)
