Spain, EU must not continue ignoring Sahrawi cause

Tfariti (Liberated Territory), 23 December 2019 (SPS) - Coordinator of the European Parliament’s Sub-Committee on Human Rights Miguel Urban Crespo, urged Sunday in Tifariti (Liberated Sahrawi Territory), the Spanish government and the EU to stop ignoring the current situation of the Sahrawi cause.
On the sidelines of the 15th Congress of the Polisario Front, which started on Thursday in Tifariti, Miguel told APS that Spain and the European Union, "indifferent and accomplice of Morocco" on Western Sahara question, must not continue to ignore the situation of the Sahrawi people and no longer waste time, considering that "Spain, which has so far been part of the problem, can become part of the solution and contribute effectively to resolving it."
He regretted that "on several occasions, economic interests prevailed over the question of the right and the respect of the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people."
For Miguel, also vice-president of the Intergroup on Western Sahara, recently approved by the European Parliament, "it would be essential for the Intergroup to ensure that the non-recognition of Western Sahara territory exploitation prevail through illegal agreements," believing that" this will be one of the priority tasks assigned to this group.”
With regard to the Moroccan-EU Association Agreement, the European Parliamentarian recalled the Article 2 which provides for the respect of Human Rights.
But "these rights are not respected by the Kingdom of Morocco, which does not even respect the rights of its own people," said Miguel Urban Crespo.
The "EU should not continue to turn a blind eye to its relations with Morocco," he stressed.
Composed of 120 MEPs, the Intergroup has recently been approved by the European Parliament, with a view to "respecting and recognizing the European court ruling "on the trade and fisheries agreement between Morocco and the EU. (SPS)
