Designation of EP group in charge of Sahrawi cause, new achievement for SADR

Tifariti (Liberated Territories), 23 December 2019 (SPS) -The Sahrawi cause has resolutely drawn its path within European institutions after it made a new achievement with the official appointment by the European Parliament (EP) of a parliamentary group in charge of the Sahrawi cause, said Sahrawi Delegate Minister for Europe Mohamed Sidati.

Following a series of consultations within seven EP groups, European MPs managed, on 16 December, to elect a group of parliamentary group in charge of the Sahrawi cause, stated Sidati on the sidelines of the 15th Polisario Front Congress in Tifariti.

This idea was among the 162 suggestions made to the EP, recalled Sidati.

Made up of 120 MPs from various political obedience, the parliamentary group in charge of Western Sahara, the only international cause chosen recently, is arousing great interest within the EP.

Referring to the assets expected after this decision Sidati dubbed the move “a great achievement” that “will have very positive impact” on the struggle of the Sahrawi people for self-determination.

The EP’s decision also reflects Morocco’s “incessant failing manoeuvres” to undermine any positive step towards independence, affirmed Sidati.

The parliamentary group “will play a key role” to inform the EP of the Sahrawi issue and will open debate to enable the Sahrawi people to assert their right to self-determination and involve the European Union (EU) as a continental organization” in the process aimed at finding a peaceful and just political solution to the Western Sahara issue, said the Sahrawi official.

Moreover, the group will have an influence on Europe’s position that remain ambiguous given the negative role France and Spain play in the region, by “leading it to take a positive and constructive stance in favour of a just and peaceful solution based on international legality,” stated Sidati.

In addition, this group will influence the decisions of the European Courts, which have repeatedly stressed that Western Sahara is a territory separate and distinct from Morocco and that any agreement requires the approval of the Saharawi people through its legitimate representative, the Polisario Front, said the Sahrawi official.
