Opening of Comoros’ Consulate in Al-Aaiun: Attack on Sahrawi people’s sovereignty

Submitted on

Tifariti (Liberated Territories), 22 December 2019 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, strongly condemned on Friday the recent decision of the Comoros’ government to open a consulate in the occupied city of Al-Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara, pointing out that it is an attack on the Sahrawi people’s sovereignty.
“We will take all the measures to oblige the Comoros to reconsider this decision,” said Ghali on the sidelines of a dinner offered to the participants of the 15th Congress of the Polisario Front, held in the liberated Sahrawi town of Tifariti.
The President of the Republic called on the African Union to act “rapidly” following this decision “in violation of AU’s Charter”, urging it to take “strict” positions concerning these Islands and oblige them to reconsider this decision, underlining that Western Sahara is a sovereign State, a founding member of AU.
