Uganda expresses its commitment to supporting efforts to decolonize Western Sahara through a referendum on the self-determination of its people

New York, Oct 09, 2019 (SPS) - The Deputy Permanent Representative of Uganda to the United Nations, Mr. Philippe Oshin Odeda, during the session of the Committee on Political Affairs and Decolonization (Fourth Committee), underlined his country's commitment to support decolonization in the African continent, in particular with respect to the last colony of Africa, Western Sahara, as well as support for internationally recognized principles of the right to self-determination of its people.
On this basis, the permanent representative added: "We support the efforts of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in the search for a peaceful solution to the Western Sahara conflict, to avoid any armed confrontation between the parties to the conflict and to maintain the international security, stability and peace in the region.
In the same context, Odeda expressed his country's concern about the persistent stagnation in the search for a solution to the problem of Western Sahara, the only non-autonomous territory in the African continent, stressing that the mechanism of the "Troika of the UA "It is designed to support the efforts of the United Nations in promoting that the parties demonstrate flexibility and good faith to conduct diplomatic negotiations, with a view to reaching a solution in accordance with international law and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations.
In conclusion, Odeda emphasized that economic development and growth in the African continent, which Africans expect from the Development Action Program, cannot be achieved in the absence of a solution to the problem of Western Sahara; "We are convinced of the need to find a fair and political solution through a referendum on self-determination under the supervision of MINURSO.
