New York, Oct 08, 2019 (SPS) - Frente POLISARIO representative to the UN, Sidi Mohamed Omar, met in New York on Monday with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Africa in charge of security operations. peacekeeping, Bintou Keita.
The Saharawi diplomat informed Bintou Keita of the Frente POLISARIO 's position on several issues related to the UN peace process and to the mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
Thursday, the President of the Republic, Brahim Gali, said in a letter to the UN GS that Morocco delayed the UN process to reinforce the brutal occupation of Sahrawi territories.
For President Gali, this delay paralyzed the political process, as Morocco intensified its destabilizing actions on the territory, calling at the same time for the appointment of a new mediator who shares the convictions, determination and stature from the former envoy, Horst Kohler.
The Frente POLISARIO GS added that the UN must not allow the political process to be "hostage" to the preconditions imposed by Morocco to derail the process of decolonization of Western Sahara.
The Security Council will meet on 16 October for a first briefing on Western Sahara in anticipation of the renewal of the mandate of MINURSO expiring on 31 October. (SPS)
