French association denounces Morocco’s repression against Sahrawi civilians

Paris, July 24, 2019 (SPS) -The Association of Friends of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (AARASD) on Monday denounced repression against Sahrawi civilians in several Sahrawi occupied territories. They were celebrating Algeria’s victory at the African Cup of Nations (CAN 2019).
According to AARASD, celebration “seems to be impossible” in occupied Western Sahara, notably the capital Aaiun, where Moroccan repression forces “attacked a crowd that rejoiced after this victory.”
“Water cannons, military devices, police and military forces violently fought this peaceful crowd.  Sabah Othman Hameida, a young woman, aged 23, ran into the crowd at full speed. Several women were injured in the face and did not receive healthcare because the hospital was closed,” said the association in a communiqué.
The Moroccan police arrested tens of Sahrawis whose detention place is still unknown.
AARASD “condemned this repression that killed one woman and arrested several citizens. Such situations perfectly demonstrate that nothing is settled in Western Sahara contrary to what Morocco wants the international community to believe.”
On Saturday, Frente POLISARIO Representative to the United Nations (UN), Mohamed Sid Omar urged the organization to assume its responsibilities and protect the Sahrawi population “victim of atrocities” committed by Moroccan occupation forces.
Sid Omar denounced the ignoble assassination of a young Sahrawi people on the sidelines of the peaceful celebration of Algeria’s victory at CAN 2019 SPS
