Submitted on

Durban, April 13, 2019 (SPS) -South Africa’s Deputy Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Luwellyn Landers reiterated his country’s commitment to a just, acceptable and sustainable solution to the Western Sahara issue based on the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.
Speaking at a conference in Duran on the priorities of South Africa’s mandate within the United Nations Security Council, Landers reiterated his country’s commitment to a just, acceptable and sustainable solution to Western Sahara. This solution should meet the aspirations and will of the Sahrawi people so that they can exercise their right to self-determination.
South Africa will advocate the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) by the Security Council and the broadening of its prerogatives to the monitoring of human rights in the territories occupied by Morocco, affirmed South African’s FM.
Africa was elected by the UN General Assembly, along with Germany, Belgium, Indonesia and the Dominican Republic, to serve on the Security Council as a non-permanent member from January 2019 for a two-year term, with a view to promoting multilateralism.
Known for its constant stances on the decolonization of African countries, Pretoria had always called for the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination.
In late March, Pretoria hosted the conference of solidarity with the Sahrawi people initiated by the Southern African Development Community (SADC). (SPS)
