New York (UN), April 21, 2018 (SPS) - The United Nations has emphasized Thursday, in York, that the liberated Sahrawi territories of Bir Lahlou are Tifariti do not fall within the buffer zone of El Guergarat as falsely claimed by Morocco.
"I can say that neither Bir Lahlou nor Tifariti fall within the buffer strip," Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN secretary General, said in his daily press briefing of April 19.
The United Nations has sharply refuted Morocco's allegations that the two areas, which are administered by the Saharawi government, are part of the buffer zone that is under UN monitoring.
Morocco has been waging a disinformation campaign over the past few days about the reality on the ground, sowing confusion on the zone's geographical data.
It is the second UN refutation of Rabat's allegations within a few days.
Early April, the United Nations denied the presence of armed Saharawi elements in the buffer zone.
"Our colleagues in MINURSO have not observed any movement of military elements in the northeast territory. MINURSO continues to monitor the situation closely," the spokesman for the UN secretary General said at his daily press briefing on April 2. (SPS)
