COPPPAL adopts resolution in support to Sahrawi people's struggle against colonization

Tegucigalpa (Honduras), Nov 26, 2017 (SPS) - The 35th Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPPAL), held from 23 to 25 November in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, wrapped with the adoption of a resolution in support to the Sahrawi people's struggle for decolonization and recovery of their territorial sovereignty.
In its final statement, COPPPAL expressed "the concerns of Latin America and the Caribbean political parties about the tragic situation and the suffering of the Sahrawi people for more than 41 years."
The participants welcomed the appointment of the United Nations Secretary General's new special envoy for Western Sahara, Horst Kohler, and reiterated "support to the UN efforts for a peaceful, just and lasting solution, which guarantees to Sahrawi people their right to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination."
COPPPAL also reiterated support to the struggle of Sahrawi people, under the leadership of Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), calling on the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean to support an urgent and just solution guaranteeing to the Sahrawi people their right to self-determination and decolonization, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN, regional organizations and the African Union.
During the works of the Conference, Sahrawi Ambassador to Nicaragua Slimane Tayeb presented a report on the recent developments of the Sahrawi cause, following the Security Council's resolution of April 2017, in addition to the developments in the region after Kohler's visit and the report presented recently before the members of the Security Council.
He also hailed the support of the peoples, the parliaments and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean for the Sahrawi people's just cause for freedom and independence. (SPS)
