Human Rights Department Director at Algerian Foreign Ministry deplores continuing suffering of Saharawi refugees

Algeria, June 21, 2017 (SPS) - The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday that tackling the issue of refugees is "an integral part of the overall solution to the Sahrawi issue", renewing Algeria's support for the Saharawi people's right to self-determination.

During his intervention in a study day on "Refugees between international, regional conventions and reality " organized on the occasion of the International Day of Refugees and the Day of African Refugees, Ambassador Lazar Soualm, Director of Human Rights, Social Development and Cultural, Scientific and International Affairs of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressed that "addressing the Sahrawi issue can not in any way be separated from the question of Saharawi refugees who have suffered for over forty years away from their usurped lands. "

In this regard, he recalled Morocco's "will to know the size of the voters, including refugees, in order to manipulate the votes by including Moroccan elements whose role is confusion and fraud."

Mr. Sualem highlighted the suffering of the Saharawi refugees scattered across a number of countries in the world as a result of Moroccan repression, recalling the presence of a permanent office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in this region to establish programs of support for the existing Saharawi refugees.

On the other hand, he expressed his regret that the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was the only UN body that did not have a human rights mandate. SPS
