Swedish Parliament calls his government to increase support to Saharawi people

Stockholm (Sweden) October 6, 2016 (SPS) - The Swedish parliament has included within the agenda of its current session a  proposal demanding its government to defend the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and calling it to accompany them to build an independent state.

The Proposal pointed out that the Western Sahara is listed for more than four decades in the list of non self-governing territories, the last colony in Africa; therefore, the Swedish Government must plead in favor of the Saharawi people in international forums.

The Swedish proposed stressed that "Morocco is trying since many year to legitimize its occupation of Western Sahara, putting obstacles in the face of efforts to organize a referendum to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their legitimate right to freedom and self-determination", calling on the Swedish government to put the Saharawi cause within the priorities in the Swedish foreign policy.

The proposal submitted by MPs on Tuesday urged also the government to contribute to the protection of the Sahrawi natural resources, to adopt strict measures on products originating in Western Sahara by putting markings on those products.

In this regard, the Swedish MPs  said that the Western Sahara's wealth "exploited for years illegally in flagrant violation of international law, the time has come for the EU to put an end to these activities and to stop the European policy mislead consumers about the origin of consumption wealth from Western Sahara.
