Washington (USA), September 08, 2016 (SPS) - US report said that the impasse over the Western Sahara continues to serve as one of the biggest obstacles to counterterror cooperation and improved economic relations among the Maghreb states.
According to the report published by the American Institute for Research in Foreign Policy this week in Washington, titled " Taking Stock of U.S. Policy Options in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia", that the impasse over the Western Sahara continues to serve as one of the biggest obstacles to counterterror cooperation, adding that this issue remains a key challenge to US policy toward Morocco. "
Report pointed out that USA had previously submitted a bill to the United States to develop a UN mechanism to monitor human rights violations in occupied Western Sahara, also American Embassy in Rabat received Sahrawi Human rights activists to discuss the Moroccan violations.
On the other hand, the US report criticized the political system in Morocco, dubbing it "authoritarian regime and hybrid, adding that democracy had not promoted in the Kingdom despite 2011 Uprising".
Report revealed that among US challenges towards Morocco is the conundrum of promoting democracy in Morocco’s hybrid authoritarian system, which combines personalism, clientelism, and economic predation with nominally democratic institutions, like parliament.
Facing this situation, The U.S. has opted to promote civil society organizations in Morocco and to support Morocco’s stated goals of gradual reform. Added the report SPS
