Aghouinit, april 23, 2016 (SPS) - Military manoeuvres have been carried out Saturday by the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army in the region of Aghouinit, in the liberated territories of Western Sahara, in presence of Sahrawi Prime Minister Abdelkader Taleb Omar and Minister of Defence Abdallah Lehbib.
In his address on this occasion, the Sahrawi Chief of Staff said that these manoeuvres are part of the annual programme of the Sahrawi Ministry of Defence and in response to the recent actions of the Moroccan colonizer to undermine negotiations between the two parties (Morocco and Polisario Front).
The Sahrawi military manoeuvres follow the expulsion by Morocco of the civilian components of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), whose main task is the organization of a fair referendum on self-determination of Sahrawi people, he added.
These manoeuvres also aim at "preparing the troops in anticipation of any emergency situation," said the Sahrawi Chief of Staff.
For his part, Youcef Ahmed, member of Polisario Front Secretariat General, underlined that the manoeuvres are intended to be a message of the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army, as the armed wing of Polisario Front, "for the liberation of the occupied territories of Western Sahara," adding that "the liberation (of the occupied Sahrawi territories) is our main objective."
These manoeuvres are taking place ahead of the meeting of the UN Security Council.
In this regard, Youcef Ahmed urged the UN to guarantee the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and end the conflict in Western Sahara.SPS
