Submitted on

Madrid, April 13, 2016 (SPS)- Spanish party Ciudadanos (citizens) called on the government of his country to "support all political initiatives for a just and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara through a referendum on self-determination."
In a press release, the Spanish party said that Spain should use its position as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to provide "strong support" to the UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara Christopher Ross.
The Spanish government should assume the historical responsibility with the Sahrawi people and should also work actively within the European Union and international institutions for the resolution of the conflict, added the statement.
The Ciudadanos party underlined the need to "recognize Polisario Front as the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people by granting a diplomatic status to the delegation representing it in Spain."
The party also called on the Spanish government to urge Moroccan authorities to "cease persecution of Sahrawi people, who are struggling against illegal occupation of Western Sahara and release the Sahrawi political prisoners."
It also emphasized the need to support the work of UN humanitarian organizations in order to help them "address the disastrous situation of Sahrawi refugees.
The Ciudadanos party is represented at the group of Spanish MPs, which has been created recently to support the Sahrawi cause.SPS
