Chaded El Hafid (Sahrawi Refugee Camps), April 05, 2016 (SPS) - Sahrawi Prime Minister Abdelkader Taleb Omar called on the Security Council to pressure Morocco to reconsider its decision to expel the Minurso’s civilian staff, demanding the release of the political detainees in the prisons of the Moroccan occupier.
The Sahrawi Prime Minister underlined in a meeting held from Sunday night to Monday, on the sidelines of the Algerian delegation’s visit to the Sahrawi refugee camps in Rabouni, the need to “speed up the return of the Minurso with its full prerogatives and a schedule setting out the holding of a referendum to avoid the deterioration of the situation in the region.”
Moreover, he hoped that the Security Council could achieve this goal, particularly after the visit of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, and his position on the sufferings of the Sahrawi people.
The Sahrawi Prime Minister stressed that “the Security Council must assume its responsibilities and address the issue in accordance with international law.”
Furthermore, Taleb Omar called for the release the Sahrawi political detainees in the prisons of the Moroccan occupier, and who are on a hunger strike since March to date.
“The political detainees are on a hunger strike since early March until today, protesting against mistreatments and the arbitrary sentences inflicted by the occupier,” said the Sahrawi official, adding that the whole world must know the truth about what is happening in the occupied territories and on the developments of the situation in the region, particularly after Ban Ki-Moon’s visit.
He also said that Sahrawis are confident and hope that the International Community adopts a firm position to avoid the deterioration of the situation in the region. According to him, the Sahrawi issue has taken steps by uncovering Morocco’s violations. “It is a propitious occasion to expose the Moroccan occupier’s actions,” he said.SPS
